I realize that you are looking for income, but

The large size, large number, placement and persistence of the advertisements on the new version is are ridiculous.The ads make it VERY difficult to navigate the site and break up the train of thought when trying to read an article interuppted by large ads. I would rather pay a fee for the app than put up with this. I LOVED Slate pre "new look" I almost hate it now.
