Buggy and slow

Its a reasonable interface, although Ive greatly missed the old double-tap for full screen mode feature lost many versions ago. But Ill give this 1 star for three big reasons: 1) No landscape view for videos. Seriously, how did you let this creep back in? Do you even do *any* testing before you release a new version? 2) Unbelievably slow - I think due to ads, although even with a Slate Plus membership it can be so slow. If youre in an area with marginal coverage it will take FOREVER to load an article, and its due to waiting for the intrusive banner ad to be fetched. Try loading Slate in a mobile browser for comparison - with that youre not staring at a blank page for a minute before anything is rendered. 3) A *ton* of in-article content that shows up fine on the web version (including mobile Safari / Chrome), completely fails to display. This includes any embedded YouTube video, and often other content like tweets and Facebook links. I could complain about other things, like Slates penchant for copying others videos and embedding lousy lower resolution versions of them served from their own servers (didnt you have a critics article about Facebook encouraging the same behavior?!), and no option to just download all of the current articles for offline viewing (see MailOnline app for this done right), but thats minor compared to the above. Fix it Slate, you can and should do better.

Great show! Look forward to it each week

Compelling content, great community feel

I really appreciate Slates wide-ranging and entertaining content, from science and technology to politics. The journalism is interesting and well written. I enjoy the humor in many articles, and in the community of readers who post comments. Slate feels like an intelligent guilty pleasure at times with pop culture mixed in, but in a thoughtful way. I always find a piece or two Im excited to share or discuss. Thank you to the fantastic team of writers, editors and tech developers who contribute to this app I love!

Good content. Junk app.

I love slate and have been reading for years. Downloaded the app to catch stories on my phone when Im away from my PC. The app crashes ALL the time. When it doesnt crash, half the time the content you want to read never loads. This is particularly frustrating when you swipe left or right and the story you didnt want to read had loaded with no trouble. I find its better to select the next story in a category and let that freeze and then swipe over to read what Im really interested in. For an organization the publishes a lot of articles about the future of tech, maybe some of these tech prognosticators can find someone in the present to fix this glitchy app.

Love the site and podcast, app is lacking

Slate has built a wonderful staff of writers and their stable of podcast are must listens. That said the app is lacking. Specifically any time it cites a tweet, YouTube link, or image they all are missing from the app. The fact that they are missing this from published content is disappointing. The fact that it has gone unchanged for as long as it has is even more inexcusable. I would love to see that changes made so I could enjoy their content on the go.

Great articles, but the app can be glitchy

Lots of ads, too, but theyre fairly unobtrusive.

Cant see pics or video

I can rarely see the pictures or videos within the articles.

Good stuff

App works well, good (if occasionally contrarian) articles, free. What more could you want?

Timely & thorough

Whenever major issues hit the news, especially court cases, I turn to Slate, because it provides timely, thorough information and analysis.

Like it

Always has something of interest to see or read Which I do every day

Decent app, major bug

The app performs reasonably well, but there is a major bug. When you click on a story, the text comes up, but the navigation bar at the top of the screen disappears, meaning you have absolutely no way of returning to the main page. Sometimes the navigation arrow shows up after a minute or so, but generally youre left with nowhere to go and no option other than to exit the app.

A Full Slate

A great way to become informed on the latest in the liberal world.

Glitch during sign up?

This app has some interesting content. However, I believe there is some sort of glitch in the signup screen. I entered my email address, password, and a screen name, assuming that my screen name would be displayed when I commented on articles. Imagine my surprise when it was my email address that was displayed instead! Huh?? I sent a request for help to the suggestion link but of course Ive heard nothing. And theres no one to contact about this type of problem. Im moving on and would recommend that you do too. Disappointing....

Good content, problematic app

Great content, but the app has a longstanding and very annoying problem: when the Internet link is less than perfect, it takes forever for individual stories to open, even when theyve already been uploaded to the app (when you have a weak connect ion and a story takes forever to open, try triggering flight mode. Bam! The story opens instantly.)

My favourite news source

Well, not really just a news source. In-depth analysis and of course opinion. Plenty of both-sides analysis too. And, I must say, the Political Gabfest podcast is the smartest thing I have *ever* heard, podcast or broadcast news or whatever. Cannot recommend that enough.

A liberal source to stay well-informed

Check out their podcasts too!

Fantastic -- buy it

Great app

Love it.

I have been listening to the excellent slate podcasts for years. But, for some reason, I thought other Slate content required payment, so I never tried any. But after getting tired of the hyperbole, poor editing and sloppy fact-checking of Salon and Huffington Post, I decided to give it a go. Its great. Interesting stories, well – edited, nicely done interface, its my new favorite issues and opinions app.

Cant always see pictures

I love the content but most of the time I have to open the story in my iPhone browser to see any pictures or tweets that have been quoted. Very annoying. Usually they arent that important but occasionally they make a difference. Please fix this Slate!

Actual bugs crawl across the screen

The none stop ads are bad enough, the actual bugs crawling across the screen is annoying enough till I can live without reading articles on slate. Heres where we part ways...
